Standard Outpatient in New York
Standard outpatient treatment—weekly individual or group therapy—provides ongoing support for those who don't need intensive programming. It's often the long-term maintenance phase after more intensive treatment, or appropriate primary treatment for those with milder addiction and strong support systems. Outpatient care keeps you connected to professional support while living independently.

Standard outpatient consists of regular therapy appointments—typically weekly individual sessions, group therapy, or both. Total time commitment is under 9 hours weekly, often just 1-3 hours. You're living your life fully while maintaining therapeutic connection.
Outpatient provides continuity of care for those who've completed more intensive treatment. Stepping down from IOP to weekly therapy maintains support while recognizing increased stability. Issues that emerge get addressed before they threaten recovery.
For some people with less severe addiction and strong external support, outpatient is appropriate as primary treatment. This requires honest assessment—outpatient works for those who can maintain sobriety with weekly support, not those hoping minimal treatment will somehow work.
Outpatient fits those needing maintenance support or with milder treatment needs:
• Completed more intensive treatment and stepping down • Need ongoing therapy for addiction and/or mental health • Have strong recovery support structures in place • Can maintain sobriety with weekly check-ins • Have stable housing, employment, and relationships • Milder addiction that hasn't required intensive intervention
You'll attend scheduled appointments—individual therapy, group sessions, or both. Sessions address ongoing recovery challenges, life stressors, relationship issues, and whatever else impacts your sobriety. Therapy might explore past issues or focus primarily on present functioning.
The therapist-client relationship becomes central in outpatient. With less group involvement, individual connection matters more. Finding a therapist you trust and connect with is important.
Between sessions, recovery is self-directed with whatever support structures you've built: 12-step meetings, SMART recovery, family support, healthy activities. Therapy provides professional perspective but isn't your only recovery support.
Typical Duration
Outpatient treatment can continue indefinitely. Many people maintain weekly therapy for years, even long into stable recovery. Others reduce frequency over time—weekly becomes biweekly becomes monthly becomes as-needed. The flexibility allows matching support level to current needs.
Intensity Level
low intensity
Outpatient doesn't structure your day—you integrate appointments into your schedule: **Example weekly structure:** • Tuesday 7:00 PM - Individual therapy (1 hour) • Thursday 6:00 PM - Outpatient group (1.5 hours) The rest of your week is self-directed with whatever recovery activities you've established.

Outpatient addiction treatment is widely available throughout New York—through specialty addiction programs, community mental health centers, and private therapists. Finding providers who specialize in addiction (look for CASAC credentials in NY) improves treatment quality. Telehealth has expanded access, particularly in rural areas.
Outpatient is the most affordable treatment level and widely covered by insurance including Medicaid. Many therapists accept insurance or offer sliding-scale fees. Out-of-pocket costs for weekly therapy are manageable for many people. Community mental health centers offer low-cost options.
